A-line in August

U.S. Capitol

Wouldn't be a 'Kayla' photo op without a few bloopers!

To those who know me well, it's no secret I prefer a dress or skirt to shorts any day in the summertime. It's been especially sticky in the city this week. Today, I swear I could feel the water in the air...talk about humid! This kind of weather calls for a wardrobe of its own - cue a great daytime (A-line) LBD. I went with a black ensemble today because with this humidity (and heat!) let's face it, it's really sweaty here.

I love a good A-line, it's universally figure flattering. If that isn't enough, the great swingy silhouette of the A-line is extremely versatile - fun, feminine and appropriate for any occasion. Between skirts and dresses, I own way more of this silhouette than my closet is willing to admit. I'll be transitioning this LBD into cooler weather with booties and a cozy sweater come fall!

It's Official

View of Lincoln Memorial from Washington Monument
It happened. I've officially made the cross-country move from Wisconsin to Washington (D.C., that is). I've had some time to get settled in, explore and catch up on some long overdue sleep. By my standards, it's been terribly hot - mid 90's are the norm, and I won't even get started on the humidity... but I'm sure in a few months' time I'll be complaining about the cold. I just can't win this argument. I stopped by the Washington Monument the other day and snapped a few photos. Man, was it ever windy! The wind was a welcome break from the heat, but it sure made for a comical bunch of photos.

Moving on - I've gotten used to riding the metro (i.e. subway) and am trying to be more conscious of keeping hand sanitizer stashed in my bag. I won't lie, public transportation is a bit gross. Convenience wise, it's great. Not so much in terms of hygiene. I've been walking significantly more than I had been in Madison and my feet have been killing me. I have a bit of a commute to work so I've been thinking about investing in some good "commuting" shoes. Comfortable shoes are a non-neogitable for me, so I've been doing a lot of research into what styles are put-together and professional but won't leave my feet crying by mid-afternoon. Scroll through the widget below to see what I've got my eye on!

Weekend in Washington, D.C.

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed that I spent the weekend in Washington, D.C. I'll be all moved out, settled into my new home and starting my new job on the East coast within the next couple of weeks! I spent the weekend playing tourist in my new city - visiting the Capitol, the National Mall and the U.S. Botanic Garden. I also learned how to perform some essential functions, like figuring out how to ride the metro, navigate my neighborhood and explore around my new office.

I stayed at the cutest little Air bnb on Capitol Hill. It was conveniently located steps from the metro and situated on the most quaint street. One of the days I met up with some friends for brunch at The Coupe (the food was great - as for the service, not so much). I spent that afternoon exploring Georgetown (obsessed) and stopped by Olivia Macaron for a midday treat. I love macarons and I'm really excited they seem to be plentiful in the District!

I'm excited to really be able to play tourist after I move - this weekend was rushed (between finding an apartment, learning how to ride the metro, meeting up with friends) so I wasn't able to see many of the "go-to" attractions. Touring the White House and visiting the National Archives are next on my list. My best friend from high school will be coming out to visit at the end of the month so I'm sure I'll have plenty of opportunities then to continue exploring the city!
