SAVVY SHOPPING

It comes as no surprise that I enjoy some quality shopping from time to time. I consider it a recreational hobby, really. What may come as a surprise, though? I loathe the mall. Hate it... did I actually just say that? Hear me out: as a teen, we used to be close. Going to the mall with my friends was a highlight of my week. Shopping was somewhat of a social event; we'd make our way though half a dozen stores, toting around bags of trendy Forever 21 dresses we'd hope would survive more than three washes and $20 cage sandals. Do you remember when neon was a trend?! I'd firmly refuse to admit at one point I thought that was "in". Oh, to be young(er) again.

I used to love the convenience of being able to pick up something from the mall and wear it that same night. On another note, it used to be much more of a necessity to try items on first in-store prior to purchase. This was to ensure proper fit, as my body was still growing. Now that I've stopped growing, I've been able to determine my size at all of my favorite retailers, making online shopping the more convenient option. Online shopping provides the foundation for which this post rests on - how to get a good deal.

So, how do I score good deals?

1. Research the product. If you're looking for a designer item, shop around. What's this item going for at other retailers? I usually compare prices between Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Dillards and Macys. I'll also take a look at what it's going for on the designer's website itself. Often times, one item can be selling at dramatically different price points depending on where you search due to promotions, sales, etc. It can really pay to shop around!

2. Know your retailer. Most retailers have a semi-annual sale, a friends + family promotion, or some other big sale event during the year. If you're not familiar with the timeframe that your preferred retailer or brand has a big sale, a simple Google search should turn up some helpful results. If you can wait to purchase your item until then, you might score some deep discounts. You should also try to become familiar with the overall sale habits of that designer or retailer - if you don't know what the best deal that retailer offers, how will you know when to take advantage of a great opportunity? For example, J.Crew often does extra 25% markdowns on their sale merchandise. But did you know, every so often sale merchandise is marked down an extra 40%? And certain sale pieces can be up to an extra 50% off? The more you know!

3. Leverage discounts. You know those annoying boxes that pop up when you visit certain websites? The ones that say "enter your email for an extra 10% off"? Do it. If the site does not automatically invite you to sign up for their email list, you can often find a link at the bottom of their website that allows you to enroll. The emails can get annoying (you can generally change your email preferences, though) but hey, it's free money. So why not? Additionally, sometimes there are some discount codes or coupons floating around the internet. Run a quick "Tory Burch discount codes" or "Nordstrom coupons 2015" Google search and see what comes up. Sometimes, multiple discount codes can be combined on a single order, so make sure you take advantage of that if it's available.

I almost always keep those steps in mind when making purchases. However, if I'm in the market for a pricier item, I usually keep an eye on it every day or so from a variety of different retailers. That way, I'm able to observe price shifts over a period of time and make a better determination as to the best price I can get for that particular item.

FALL HAUL

I love fall shopping. I've never really been one to go for the bold colors or patterned dresses of summer. Aside from stripes and plaid, I tend to favor solid neutrals. Nearing the end of summer, I often find myself in a bit of a rut, stuck on basic silhouettes and lightweight fabrics (cue silk, chiffon and linen). Fall always seems to breathe new life into my closet with the introduction of seasonal textures. Flannel shirts, cashmere scarves, wool jackets, cable knit sweaters and quilted vests? Swoon. I love it all. An array of textures assures that I'm never short on options for creating variety in my everyday styles.

My favorite recent purchases include this incredibly soft and easy-to-style flannel shirt. I've also been wearing this solid white (and striped!) long sleeve shirt on repeat. This week I picked up the most flattering wool jacket from J.Crew in black - never thought I'd be excited for winter weather. Now I'm on the hunt for the perfect pair of heels... easier said than done!

BLOWN AWAY

Vest (old, this year's version) || Flannel Shirt || Denim || Boots (old, similar) || Bag || Sunnies || Scarf

Autumn is my favorite season of the year. Walking down cobblestone sidewalks in the District amidst the changing tree-lined streets is really quite charming. My hair always seems to be grateful for the absence of humidity, while I find myself struggling to ward off early signs of dry "winter" skin. You win some, you lose some.

The other day I spent some time admiring the city from my roof deck. A recent dip in temperatures coupled with a crisp wind made for an unseasonably chilly week. Really, by all accounts, perfect fall weather. I find that sometimes dressing for the transitional weather can be a bit challenging. I'm always asking myself "will I be too cold wearing this skirt?" or "will I be too warm in this sweater?"

My solution? Layering. I love how easy it is to throw on a couple of layers and create a cohesive autumn look. Layering also affords the flexibility I want when I'm unsure of how to dress for the weather (which has been quite frequent recently). Right now I'm really loving the versatility of vests - but I find myself wearing jean jackets and chunky sweaters as outer layers, too.

End note: have you shopped the Tory Burch Private Sale yet? I'm excited to style the Leena Booties I snagged in an upcoming post!

TORY BURCH: PRIVATE SALE

The Tory Burch Private Sale is back! While the sale goes through Monday 10/26, shopping early guarantees the best selection. So many great pieces are on major sale! I snagged a pair of Leena Booties and the All-T Smartphone Wristlet in camel. Both items I purchased appear to be sold out already - so get to shopping if you're hoping to score some great deals!

LATELY - OCTOBER

October is officially in full swing! Actually, it's over halfway through. How did that even happen? It seems like just a few weeks ago I was making the transition to D.C. and griping about the incessantly sticky weather. Since then, the summer heat has trailed off (a welcomed gesture) and I've become a full-fledged Washingtonian consumed by the 9 to 5 grind.

Blogging has taken a backseat in my life recently, and as a result, I've neglected to produce new content. In an effort to hold myself more accountable, I've decided to write a monthly series (i.e. "lately") about my current musings. Enjoy!

Wearing: This week I finally transitioned my closest from summer to fall - a true indication that summer's over. While I'm thankful for the break in humidity, by no means am I ready for winter. I've been pairing skirts and sweaters to take advantage of the transitional weather... and also to avoid having to wear dress pants to work for as long as possible. After searching  for half an eternity, I've finally found the perfect fisherman sweater. I'm thinking about adding the navy version to my closet, too!

Watching: Food documentaries on Netflix. Admittedly, I've probably seen a good number of the food-based documentaries available for viewing on Netflix. I'm fascinated by the ways in which America's political climate influences the agricultural industry and the implications those relationships produces. I recently watched Cowspiracy, a great eye-opening film on the sustainability of livestock production. I'm also a big fan of The Office, and am sad to say I'm nearing the end of the series!

Consuming: Brunch. It's a sport here in the District. I've tried a host of different restaurants and am 100% reliant on this fabulous little website I stumbled upon for the best recommendations. My secret? Bitches Who Brunch. While the site currently only features brunch spots in D.C., Chicago and NYC, it's worth a read if you're traveling to one of the aforementioned cities.

Coveting: Everything - recently, my wish list has grown much too long. Last year I couldn't quite pull the trigger on this Barbour jacket and it's been on my mind ever since! This season I'm really loving this quilted jacket, too. I've also had my eye on this pair of Frye riding boots. For now, it seems most of my wants will exist virtually on my coveting Pinterest board rather than physically in my closet. Wishful thinking!
